KINTSUGI
CEREMONY KIT
FINALIST OF THE RADO STAR PRIZE UK 2017
The Kintsugi Ceremony Kit looks at facilitating an experience, which will give an object a special meaning and ultimately contribute to its longevity. It is a wedding present, branded in the style of the German porcelain manufacturer Rosenthal.

The “ceremony” is a crossover between the German wedding tradition “Polterabend”, where dishes are smashed for good luck, and “Kintsugi”, the Japanese art of joining broken ceramics with gold.  The couple would smash the plate according to the tradition and then collaboratively reassemble it using the Kintsugi Kit, creating a unique product and ultimately crafting a memory, which would give the final product its special meaning.

I DECIDED TO BRAND MY DESIGN FOR ROSENTHAL, ONE OF GERMANY’S MOST ESTABLISHED, COMMERCIAL PORCELAIN MANUFACTURERS. IT IS A DESIGN-ORIENTATED, MODERN BRAND WITH A PRODUCT RANGE THE KINTSUGI CEREMONY KIT WOULD ARGUABLY FIT INTO WELL, WITH PRECEDENTS SUCH AS THE FAMOUS DROOG “DO BREAK”  VASE.
